Motoring

Motoring documents required by law include a UK valid full driving licence and a Green Card is compulsory (ask your insurance company for advice). Other documents may also be required so we advise you contact the Ministry of Mobility (address below) to check according to your circumstances.

Speed limits for coaches
Please note that the coach sector and the Ministry of Mobility and Transport are currently supporting a proposal to increase the speed limits for coaches on motorways from 90 to 100 kph (from 56 to 62 mph). As for now, speed limits remain as indicated below.

In town: 50 kph (31 mph)
Outside built-up areas: 75 kph (47 mph)
On motorways: 90 kph (56 mph)
Minimum speed on motorways: 70 kph (45 mph)

Safety
Where a coach is equipped with seatbelts, these must be worn by both the driver and the passengers.

Driving tips
At junctions, cars coming from the right have priority unless shown otherwise; trams always have priority. Headlight beams have to be altered for driving on the right hand side of the road. Motorways are toll-free. Unleaded petrol (super) and diesel are widely available.

Please note that vehicles heavier than 3.5 tons are not allowed in any of the tunnels in the Brussels Region (except on motorways). Therefore, large coaches are not allowed to drive through the tunnels on the Brussels small ring road (Leopold II tunnel, Reyerstunnel…). Signs clearly indicate when access is denied. Coaches can easily drive alongside these tunnels. Do note that the police are very strict.

Signage
Until recently all motorway signs have been in French and Flemish. A new law means signs will only be in Flemish in the Flanders region so be sure to know where you are headed.

Seat Belt Laws in Flanders
Passengers as well as the driver must wear a seat belt when the seat is equipped. Since March 2003 new coaches are obliged by law to be equipped with belts on all seats. Labels on each seat advise the passenger that they are obliged to wear the belt. The driver or the agent of the group can also inform passengers to wear the belt when using a Belgian coach.
