Fabulous Flanders
Many countries or regions are easy to capture in a few quick clichés. Thailand: Beaches and sea. Holland: cheese, clogs and windmills. But what is Flanders? Of course, there are the ancient cities of Bruges and Ghent. There is also the port of Antwerp. But then there are also the famous pralines and jenever, frites (French fries) and beer. Then there's Rubens and Bruegel; tapestry; lace and miniatures. There are many aspects of Flanders and it is hard to sum the destination in one short sentence.

Flanders borders the North Sea, and is situated between The Netherlands and France. It is the northern part of Belgium. The most important cities of Europe - London, Paris, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Cologne, Bonn and Luxembourg - are all situated within a few hours train journey from Flanders' capital Brussels.

Where TO Go
Brussels
Brussels
As the headquarters to the EU (European Union) and NATO it is often referred to as The Capital of Europe. An international metropolis famous for its splendid architectural styles of the city, Brussels also hosts over 80 museums, numerous tourist attractions, a vibrant nightlife, and more restaurants than you could count. The starting point for any visit to Brussels is the Grand Place, which was built as a merchant’s market in the 13th century. It serves as the center of the city and hosts numerous concerts and festivals. Shopping in the distinctive fashion boutiques, lingering over a delicious lunch in a bistro or a top restaurant, people watching from a street cafe, or picking up a unique antique on the Sablon - Brussels is a city you can call your own. Antwerp
Antwerp
There is so much that is cool about Antwerp, it's hard to know where to start... but perhaps, best is start with the hotels. There are several stunning boutique properties in Antwerp. Housed in old buildings, but decorated with a mix of contemporary style and antique furnishings, a visit to either is like staying in someone's ultra-chic home .Then, of course, there are the bars and restaurants. The shopping in Antwerp is fabulous: for great local fashion boutiques, head for Nationalestraat and the surrounding area, but if interiors are more your thing then make a beeline for Kloosterstraat, where you will find plenty of antiques and design shops. Cool areas of Antwerp include the neighborhood of Zuid, with its Art Nouveau buildings and artistic vibe thanks to museums and galleries, and plethora of bars and restaurants. Watch out, too, for the docks area to the north of the city, which is in the process of regenerating and is all set to be a hip new destination.

Ghent
Ghent
A walk through Ghent is like traveling from the 14th century to the 21st, from medieval guild houses to the Museum of Modern Design. And when sun goes down, Ghent comes to life and where you least expect it you find a trendy jazz club, a cosy lounge bar, a hot salsa spot or a lively nightclub. With most of the town center closed to cars, it is best explored on bicycles or by boat along the elegant canals. The popular ten-day Ghent Celebrations are held every year in July, when the locals and outsiders come together to enjoy a unique feast of daily theater performances, concerts, singing, dancing, and drinking.

Bruges
Bruges
Bruges is so pristine, it's akin to a film set, which seems appropriate given that 2008 marked the premiere of “In Bruges”, a film starring Ralph Fiennes and Colin Farrell. Hotels in general, because of the nature of the city, tend to be charming, small and family-run. One family making a name for itself in Bruges is the Vanhaeckes, who own Bonifacius and manage to successfully combine stylish interiors with a warm welcome. Although Bruges is a small city it will take more than one day to explore all the architectural and artistic treasures, folklore, chocolate shops, lace boutiques, and ambient restaurants on offer.

Ghent
In the last five years or so, Mechelen's Vismarkt has gone from being a backwater to being the city's chic waterside, a destination for business and pleasure alike .The transformation of the former Lamot brewery into a heritage centre, conference centre and restaurant combined has been at the forefront of this change. Opposite the Lamot Brewery stands the new Hotel Ve, which is housed in what was once a fish smokehouse and has contemporary, comfortable interiors. These two new enterprises have really changed the atmosphere of the area, which is particularly fun in the summer when customers sit out on the pavements idly watching the tourist boats on the canal come and go.

Whether you’re looking to quench your thirst for knowledge or just your thirst, Leuven is the ideal place. This youthful town is home to one of Europe’s oldest universities, and history is ever present. A few lucky students and faculty even have the distinct privilege of living in the 13th century stone Beguinage selected as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Also where there are students... there is beer, and Leuven is Belgium’s reigning brew capital – no mean feat in a country that produces hundreds of delicious varieties.
