Great Beguinage

During the Crusades many women were left behind whilst their husbands, fathers and brothers went off to fight the Holy Wars. For protection and company Beguinages were built to house these women. Although not Convents the women lived a contemplative life but were free to leave at any time. Today the Beguinage houses students and lecturers from the University.

Grote Markt

Including the Stadhuis, built between 1439 and 1468, which is one of the most splendid Gothic buildings in the world and the Cathedral of St Pieterskerk; do make time to pop into Cafe Gambrinus, a local institution since 1896, for a coffee or beer.

Oude Markt

This square is jam-packed with places to drink and is known by locals as 'the longest bar in the world'. Do sample the local beer - Stella Artois may be available worldwide, but a beer always tastes different in its home town! For a real home brew try Domus, a cosy bar where the beer is piped in direct from its own brewery next door.

Kruidtuin

Belgium's oldest botanical garden is small but perfectly formed; a great place to sit for a moment of quiet contemplation or a peaceful bite to eat.

Marktrock

Held every year in August, this is one of Europe's biggest urban music festivals; rock and pop bands from around the world, such as Kanye West and Snoop Dogg, turn venues including the Oude Markt into one huge party.
